Common Use:
Testing for prion diseases may be considered for patients with undiagnosed, rapidly progressive dementia.

Information is collected from a variety of sources that may include brain or tonsillar biopsy, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Analysis for the presence of 14-3-3 type protein, electroencephalogram (EEG), brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), neurologic exams, and patient history.

Normal Findings:
(Negative biopsy, normal CSF protein levels, normal EEG, normal MRI, normal neurologic examination.
